Dear Francine,
I’m one half of a happy couple and we’re living in our first apartment together. I confess, I’ve not always been the best at keeping house. I tend to leave the cleaning to the last minute, relying on visual clues like the odd bit of dust on the floor or the patented “smell check” to determine whether something needed cleaning. I’ve gotten a bit more organized when it comes to cleaning the rugs and furniture over the years, but one thing I’ve never been clear on is mattress etiquette. What are the general rules for keeping a mattress clean?
Great question! Our best advice for keeping your bed feeling and smelling fresh is to follow these three simple rules.
1) Flip and Rotate: For some, this is the most daunting bit of mattress maintenance you will do. Mattresses may be cumbersome, but flipping them isn’t that difficult even if you have to do it by yourself. By flipping and rotating your mattress every few months, you prolong the lifespan of your mattress. Rather than enduring constant wear and tear from providing support on your usual side of the bed, flipping and rotating your mattress prevents any one area from getting worn down before its time.
2) Vacuum: A simple vacuuming is recommended at least once or twice a week to keep your bed free of minor bits of wool, hair, or minor detritus like dust or food crumbs.
3) Deodorizing: You may have the cleanest mattresses and be very strict about following the first two steps, but it’s still absorbing every bit of perspiration from your body. Deodorizing the mattress is easily done by pouring baking soda on the mattress. After 30 minutes, the baking soda will have absorbed the excess moisture and neutralized odors. The baking soda can then be vacuumed off.
