If you are dealing with a small, fresh stain, there are a couple of things you can do to treat them at home. Any solid or dry staining material can be gently scooped off with a spoon. Then, you can gently blot the stained area with a cloth to absorb the stain.
If the area is dry but still prominently stained, you need to look at cleaning solutions. Before you do anything with the stained area, you will first want to know what the cleaning instructions are on your furniture tags. It is tempting to remove tags, but it is best to have them present on your furniture so you can easily access cleaning instructions when a fresh stain has occurred.
These tags often use a single letter as a short-hand for cleaning instructions. Have a look at your tags. Did you see a “W”? That means you can only use water-based cleaners. An “S” would indicate that water-based cleaners should be avoided in favor of solvent-based ones. Seeing “WS” means that your upholstery can be cleaned with either.
