Carpet Q&A

Dear Francine,

My wife and I have moved into an older home. The carpets had been replaced just prior to our move in date. I have a few questions and I hope you can help me, Francine. How often should we have the carpets cleaned? What are the rules I should follow for cleanings? When should I get carpets replaced? What are the side effects of an unclean carpet?

-Carpet Concerns

Thank you so much for submitting your question, CC! Whether you have built your home from scratch, completely refurbished the interiors of an older home, or have moved into an existing home without replacing any of the carpeting, there are still a few key tidbits of carpet knowledge to keep in mind so that your carpet will be functional and safe in your home.

How often should you clean your carpet? A major professional cleaning, like the kind Sparkling Clean offers with our quick Dry Foam Cleaning Method, should be performed once per year.  Doing a yearly Dry Foam clean should be thought of as regular maintenance for your carpet, extending its lifespan and keeping it looking and feeling fresh.

But what of more general cleanings throughout the year? Typically speaking, you will want to do a few general cleanings every few weeks with a vacuum. You will want to increase the frequency of your vacuuming based on the age of the carpet, as older carpets will need more work done to keep them looking spotless.

How often should you have your carpet replaced? Well, that is variable. Most carpets are made with the understanding that they are best kept between five and fifteen years before being replaced. Many homeowners tend to split the difference and arrange to have their carpets replaced every ten years. Why? Partially, it is the aforementioned need to have carpets cleaned as we went into detail above. Yet, there could be something more unpleasant tucked away in the fibers of older carpets.

The older the carpet, the more likely the carpet is home to dust, dust mites, and bacteria. Can these issues be taken care of with cleaning? Yes, but the greater frequency of cleaning for older carpets make this a losing battle. The side effects of an unclean carpet results in a diminished quality in the air in your home, which could increase strain on any family members or guests with breathing difficulties.
