What’s Good for the Goose

Dear Francine,

I want to keep my bedroom nice, warm, and tidy for the holidays. However, I have goose down pillows and luxurious duvet. Does Sparkling Clean handle these speciality items? How often should I clean my duvet? What can I do so that my pillows and duvet stay in the best possible shape? Is it possible to clean these items in my own home?

Thanks a lot for all your great questions! All of us at Sparkling Clean are happy to apply our famed Dry Foam cleaning method to any furniture that might need cleaning, but it’s not necessary for all items. Many are surprised that regular cleaning and maintenance is possible for more high-end items like goose down duvets, comforters, and pillows.

Typically with down products like duvets and pillows, they don’t have to be cleaned very often and small stains can be gently treated with a diluted, non-detergent solution. Duvets only need to be cleaned 3-5 years, barring special circumstances. With that in mind, it is easy to see why so many see down duvets as a great long-term investment: if you take care of the duvet, it won’t require much in the way of cleaning.

So long as there are no rips in the material, down pillows and duvets can be machine washed in a front-loaded machine with non-detergent liquid soap. Ideally, you will only wash the duvet separately or only wash a pillow or two at a time so as not to cramp the items and potentially warp them out of shape. With both the washing and drying of down items, you are going to want to run your washer and dryer several times on the lowest possible setting. For the drying cycle, you will want to enclose dryer balls to speed up what can be a lengthy dry time.
